The Mummy: Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor
September 27th 2008 10:40
I THINK the first mummy film I ever saw was the 1932 Boris Karloff classic, and I was well pleased when Universal updated the franchise in 1999.
For this three-quel, the ever-likeable Brendan Fraser returns as Rick O’Connell and the lovely Maria Bello steps into the shoes of his wife Evelyn after Rachel Weisz decided not to reprise the role.
Thirteen years on from the events of The Mummy Returns, the O’Connells are living in luxury (their artefact-packed mansion is amazing!) and their heroic exploits have made them the toast of the town. However, there’s something missing – adventure.
It comes when the couple’s son Alex (Luke Ford) discovers the tomb of the first ruler of China, the ruthless Emperor Han (Jet Li). After being freed from his terracotta prison, Han – or at least his mummy – goes on a quest to raise an army of 10,000 invincible soldiers so he can enslave the world. Naturally, the O’Connells, along with Evelyn’s brother (John Hannah) and a mysterious Chinese stunner (Michelle Yeoh), set out to stop him.
The costumes and sets are fantastic –1946 Shanghai sparkles – and the acting’s decent, but the CG effects aren’t quite as good as they could’ve been. It’s also slightly silly in parts (a yak vomiting?).
Even so, I still believe Hollywood needs The Mummy in one form or another. It has a bit of everything, from adventure to romance and action. And isn’t that why we all started going to the movies in the first place?
