The Go-Getter
September 7th 2008 13:55
YOU probably haven’t heard of this straight-to-DVD indie gem, but do yourself a favour and check it out.
Little-known Lou Taylor Pucci plays Mercer, a pensive 19-year-old who steals a car and sets out to find his estranged half-brother, ostensibly to inform him of their mother’s death.
Mercer’s barely out of his small town when a mobile phone rings. It’s the vehicle’s owner (Zooey Deschanel), who amazingly isn’t too upset. She says she won’t report the car stolen…as long as he calls her regularly with updates on his unconventional road trip.
It soon becomes clear that the half-brother is a bit of a rat bag – almost everyone Mercer encounters has a horror story about him to tell. It’s going to be a long journey…and getting sidetracked by a femme fatale (Jena Malone) he’s fancied since he was 11 doesn’t help.
Mercer meets some interesting people along the way, from Bohemian potters to a philosophical pornographer and a knife-toting travelling liquor salesman, but it’s the car’s mysterious owner he most connects with.
The excellent soundtrack by M. Ward fits perfectly, Pucci delivers a mature performance and Deschanel’s a delight, as always.
So, what are you waiting for? Go get it!
