THE AMERICAN

Director: Anton Corbijn
Stars: George Clooney, Violante Placido, Paolo Bonacelli, Johan Leysen
UNIVERSAL
IF The American was any slower, it would stop altogether. But that’s not to say it’s a bad movie.
Based on the 1990 Martin Booth novel A Very Private Gentleman, it stars George Clooney as an assassin who flees Sweden after a bloody incident and heads to a small Italian village to lie low. While in hiding, his mysterious employer tasks him with building a unique sniper rifle for an even more mysterious woman (Reuten), but an unexpected friendship with a Catholic priest and an intense relationship with a prostitute (Placido) cause him to alter his focus.
Clooney delivers an uncharacteristically brooding performance, which is a highlight of the film, along with director Corbijn’s masterful use of lighting and cinematography. However, the ending is somewhat unsatisfying and plot questions remain.
