Step Brothers

IT MAY seem like a rather unlikely pairing, but Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly obviously enjoy each other’s company, and that really comes across in this fairly lowbrow – but not unfunny – comedy.
Ferrell is 39-year-old Brennan and Reilly is 40-year-old Dale. Both unemployed and still living at home, they’re thrown together when their single parents (Steenburgen and Jenkins*) hook up at a conference and get married. There’s a lot of animosity between the two at first, but they soon become best friends, causing havoc along the way and testing the patience of their long-suffering relations.
Most of the laughs stem from watching grown men act like kids, but it’s also a testament to the skill of Ferrell and Reilly. In lesser hands, Step Brothers would more than likely have skipped a theatrical release altogether and gone directly into a wire bargain bin at Target.
It’s probably not a DVD you’d want to own, but it’s worth renting, particularly if beer and pizza are involved.
