Journey To The Centre Of The Earth (3D)

October 11th 2008 02:55
FOLLOWING his lead role in The Mummy: Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor (see below) comes another star turn for Brendan Fraser in this modern adaptation of the classic Jules Verne novel.
Fraser plays Trevor Anderson – a university geology professor who heads up a struggling research lab that specialises in the study of plate tectonics. The lab is named after his brother Max, who went missing during an expedition to Iceland a decade earlier.
When Max’s nonchalant teenage son Sean (Josh Hutcherson) comes to stay with Trevor while his mother moves house, the shambolic professor attempts to relate to the boy by giving him some of Max’s prized possessions. One of them is a dog-eared copy of Journey, which Sean soon discovers may hold the key to Max’s whereabouts.
Fast-forward to Iceland, where Trevor and Sean enlist the help of a young mountain guide named Hannah (Anita Briem). Her father disappeared along with Max and she believes it had something to do with them being ‘Vernians’ – people who believe Verne’s stories to be based in fact rather than fiction.
Needless to say, they eventually find a portal to the allegedly mythical land beneath the Earth’s surface and encounter all of the fanciful attractions that have made the novel a best seller for 144 years.
For me, Icelandic actress Briem is the standout performer. She’s cute in a Kirsten Dunst sort of way, and I can see her having a decent career in Hollywood. However, the real star of the piece is the 3D effects.
Yes, you have to wear silly – and slightly annoying – glasses, but we’re talking about FULL 3D here, from start to finish. It’s undeniably impressive, whether you’re watching coins fall to the floor or a T-Rex snarling at you from the screen.
All in all, it’s good family entertainment.
