I Am Legend

I Am Legend
Legendary?

I Am Legend is a 1954 science fiction novel authored by Richard Matheson, its been made into movies 3 times over as The Last Man on Earth in 1964, The Omega Man in 1971 and most recently as I Am Legend in 2007.

Will Smith is no doubt a gifted actor, whatever role he picks, he is usually entertaining. Nothing has changed with I Am Legend, instead of a wise cracking, funny guy that we have been accustomed to seeing in past, he takes on more of a serious role. He gives a good account of himself as the “last man on earth”.

The movie is rumoured to have been made for US$ 150 million, looking at the movie it seems most of that budget went in turning New York into a baron, soulless and empty city, this transformation is awesome to behold, however the special effects for the “monsters” are quite poorly done, very bland and never really filling you with disgust or fear like a monster should. I guess ever since the Matrix films those moments where you go “wow, how did they do that” have been far and in between.

Will Smith’s character Robert Neville is the only survivor of a viral disease which has wiped out New York’s population. He searches for the cure throughout the movie.

The look of the film is great in some parts, but annoyingly average in others. The story moves well through the first two thirds of the movie, but really lets itself down with a mediocre ending. Is it just me or do most movies these days seem scared to push the envelope, to challenge the audience and give them a conclusion witch is not so typical of a Hollywood blockbuster.

I would give the movie 6/10, Will Smith manages to make the best of a less then stellar script.

I agree. I would give it about 7/10. Good but not great.

I agree Jason. I reviewed this also, and found it really lacking in a lot of areas where it could have been far more powerful (ie. the Infected). Smith held it together, but apart from that... poor screenplay adaptation, and too much money thrown at it, turning it into standard Hollywood styrofoam instead of the apocalyptic epic it had the potential to be.
