Hellboy II: The Golden Army
September 7th 2008 13:52
SEQUELS don’t always live up to the original and fans are often left wondering where it all went wrong. Thankfully, that’s not the case with Hellboy II, which is perhaps even better than the 2004 flick that had sci-fi fans in a bit of a frenzy.
This time around, demonic superhero Hellboy (Ron Perlman) and his colourful colleagues at the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defence (BPRD) are up against Prince Nuada (Luke Goss) – a warmongering elf intent on ending an ancient truce between his kind and humans. If Nuada can assemble three pieces of a magical crown, he will gain control of the invincible Golden Army.
In the midst of the chaos, Hellboy’s relationship with his pyrokinetic girlfriend Liz (Selma Blair) is in the balance, and charming amphibian Abe Sapien (Doug Jones) falls for Princess Nuala, Nuada’s not-so-evil sister.
Writer/director Guillermo del Toro adds a new member to the BPRD team in the entertaining Johann Krauss (voiced by Seth MacFarlane) and there are more weird and wonderful creatures than you can poke an ugly stick at, particularly in the brilliantly conceived Troll Market.
Great humour and terrific performances all round, combined with Del Toro’s meticulous eye for detail, make Hellboy II stand out from the pack.
You’ll never think of the Tooth Fairy in the same way again…
